Kela Coto

Gijón, 1979

Is a photographer and video artist. Her work focuses on the construction of the contemporary landscape and the relationship between reality and representation. Through photography and moving images, she explores issues such as the idea of landscape as a stage, the materiality of the invisible, and imagination as a form of knowledge. Her practice is characterized by a poetic approach to the image and by a constant reflection on the complexity of experience and the perception of reality.

She has a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid (2005) and a Master’s Degree in Photography “New Documentary” from EFTI, Madrid (2011). She has furthered her training in workshops with renowned photographers and filmmakers such as Simon Norfolk, Cristina García Rodero, Shelby Lee Adams, Eduardo Momeñe, and José Luis Guerín, as well as participating in a documentary workshop at the EICTV in Cuba (2006).

His work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, including Memorias del subsuelo (Memories of the Subsoil) at Llamazares Galería (2023), Materia frágil, Becoming Immortal at the CCAI in Gijón (2023), Ponto de vista. Cómo construir el territorio (Point of View: How to Build Territory) at the OFF Festival of PhotoEspaña in Madrid (2022), Amplificación del territorio (Amplification of Territory) at Espacio Pablo de Lillo (2020), and Ensayo sobre la montaña (Essay on the Mountain) at Espacio Líquido (2017). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions at national and international institutions and art centers, such as the Alcobendas Art Center (Madrid), the Tito Bustillo Cave Art Center (Ribadesella), the Cervantes Institute in Shanghai, and the Qu Museum (Suzhou, China), among others.

Throughout his career, he has received various grants and awards, including the Caja Rural de Asturias Acquisition Prize at CANL (2024), the Feature Film Award for Órbita at Laboral Cinemateca (2022), an artist residency at LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial (2021), and his selection in Descubrimientos PhotoEspaña (2016). He was also an artist in residence at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid (2014).

His work forms part of prominent public and private collections, including the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, the Jovellanos Museum in Gijón, the Niemeyer Center in Avilés, and the Pilar Citoler Collection, as well as numerous private collections in Spain and abroad.
