María Jesús Rodríguez (Oviedo, Spain, 1959) studied at the School of Applied Arts in Oviedo and is one of the leading figures in contemporary Asturian sculpture. Since 2005 she has been represented by Galería Llamazares, developing a highly consistent sculptural practice in which matter, space and memory form the core of her artistic research.
Her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions at institutions and art centres including the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, the Barjola Museum (Gijón), Revillagigedo Palace (Gijón), Nicanor Piñole Hall (Gijón), the Principality of Asturias Exhibition Hall (Madrid), the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, BINZ39 Gallery (Zurich) and Galería Llamazares (Gijón). As a member of the historic ABRA group, founded in 1980, she has also exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, West Broadway Gallery (New York) and the Historic Building of the University of Oviedo, among other venues.
In 2018, the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to her work, reaffirming her position as one of the key figures in Asturian contemporary art. In 2025 she received the Fundación Banco Sabadell Acquisition Award at the fifth edition of ENTREARTE, held at Sala SabadellHerrero in Oviedo. This distinction adds to previous recognitions including the Silver Medal of the Principality of Asturias (2019), First Prize at the Luarca National Painting Competition, a grant from the Department of Culture of the Principality of Asturias, a residency grant at BINZ39 Foundation (Zurich), and the award for the integration of public art in the Principality of Asturias Government Services Building.
She has completed numerous public art commissions, including Na Memoria for Parque de Europa (Gijón), a sculpture for the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, the TRANSFER project (Münster, Germany), Senda de los 12 Puentes (Vegadeo), and Los Reguerones, integrated into the façade of La Luz Health Centre (Avilés). In 2024 she presented Camín de memoria, her most recent solo exhibition at Galería Llamazares, curated by Santiago Martínez.
