Aplazar la fragilidad

From an anthropological perspective, the term “fragility” (from the Latin *fragilis*, meaning “to break”) refers to the inherent condition of human finitude.

Fragility appears as a force that contradicts the idea of progress and, at the same time, as a constant reminder of the possibility of destruction.

Does progress save us, or condemn us? The idea of progress is so ingrained that it is rarely questioned. The pursuit of order and progress, within a mechanistic view, often ignores the disorder it generates, thus challenging the notion of linear, upward progress.

In this exhibition, entropy—a central theme in my work—is linked to the exponential disorder produced by the idea of progress. The law of entropy, which describes the universal tendency toward disorder, undermines the idea of history as a continuous process of advancement.

Fragility reminds us of the constant possibility of destruction, both on an individual and collective level. Delaying or ignoring fragility does not eliminate it. Recognising our fragility, embracing uncertainty, and acting accordingly is essential to building a more sustainable future.

In the age of the internet, what was once separated has now become blurred: public and private, emotion and intimacy, virtual and real.

We live in a state of constant alert, where everything can be recorded and made permanent, alongside a paradoxical cult of ephemerality. Empty spaces—of transition, interpretation—are disappearing. We live in a society obsessed with security, risk elimination, and cushioning experience. We lack the tools to process, question, engage, and transform difficulties. We are more fragile because slowness, depth, and dialogue have been eroded by technology.

The bombardment and repetition of images and information make us visually numb and lead to repetitive behaviours. They weaken attention and critical judgement, leaving us reliant on appearances and preconceived ideas. This produces a form of involuntary solitude, sustained by the illusion of connection.

Fragility is not always weakness. We must preserve fragility, just as we must preserve what is “useless,” because the useless protects us from pure productive logic.
